These tapestries use black cotton yarn and natural mesquite beans preserved in polyurethane. When mesquite beans dry out (and before the bugs get to them) they rattle when you shake them and the sound reminds me chicharras (cicadas) in the South Texas brush. I wanted to make a visual representation of that sound, so I used mesquite beans inlaid into a pattern that resembles musical notes in sheet music.
